Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell Switched Places on Late Night Shows

Ferrell and Reynolds pulled off a unique promotion of their respective films ‘The Shrink Next Door’ and ‘Red Notice.’

On November 10th Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds pulled off a unique marketing tactic for their respective movies. Ferrell was expected on The Tonight Show and Reynolds was expected on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The two switched places, saying the other couldn’t make it, confusing both the audience members and the hosts.

Will Ferrell went on Kimmel wearing pajamas and slippers, promoting Ryan Reynold’s film ‘Red Notice,’ which was released the next weekend. A casually-dressed Reynolds went on Fallon, promoting Ferrell’s film ‘The Shrink Next Door.’ They both raved about each other and the cast members of each film, allowing them to promote both films to each audience.

The best part about this stunt was that the two pretended that they didn't know (or honestly didn’t know) what the other’s film was about. They went on with only the preparation of when and where each would be available. Reynolds and Ferrell made jokes guessing about the plot and talking about each other. It was a similar bit to when Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig presented at the 2013 Golden Globes where they wrongly and hilariously guessed what the nominated films were about. It was very well-received considering how simple the concept was - an effect of great comedians.

The way to sell a comedy film is obviously through comedy. Not only do you need a funny trailer, but you also need a unique angle. Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell have been making comedy films for years so audiences often feel that they know what to expect. But Reynolds is known for his marketing skills, with promotions for ‘Deadpool’ and his brand of gin. This technique provided surprise and reminded the audience how funny these two actors really are. All the while promoting both films on each show.
