On May 27th the highly anticipated ‘Friends: The Reunion’ was finally released on HBO Max after year-long delays due to COVID-19. Being arguably one of the best and most beloved sitcoms of all time, a massive amount of people hoped for some kind of reunion or reboot, as many often do for old television shows.

The reunion special channeled nostalgia in their marketing strategy, which we often have for old television shows, especially those which aired for a long period of time. Having access to old shows like ‘Friends’ on streaming platforms makes many people miss the time when it aired on television and others wish they had gotten to experience it then.

Nostalgia is also heightened for ‘Friends’ because of the nature of the characters and their friendships. The maturity and character development, along with the humorous character dynamics made the show relatable and even more loved.

Viewers looked forward to witnessing the chemistry between the actors again for this reunion, as all of them would be in the same room once again on the Warner Bros. set where they originally filmed each episode. This makes the reunion special appear to be a rare occurrence, encouraging many lovers of the show to not want to miss out.

In addition, celebrity guests, such as Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber appeared to take part in the special episode, luring in new viewers who may be fans of these guests. With many celebrity guests, the episode appeared more and more as a very special experience, likely encouraging many to go back and watch more ‘Friends’ episodes. And the key is that these episodes, along with the reunion, are exclusively available on HBO Max, which can potentially expand their subscriber base.
