Netflix’s Upcoming Film ‘Don’t Look Up’ and Its Stacked Cast

The first look at Adam McKay’s new Netflix film.

On September 8th, we saw the first look at ‘The Big Short’ director, Adam McKay’s newest film. The Netflix satire made viral news with its star-studded cast, including Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Meryl Streep, Kate Blanchett, and Ariana Grande, among many more.

Most Netflix films do not have a theatrical release, but ‘Don’t Look Up’ is expected to release in select theaters beginning December 10th. Past Netflix films, such as ‘The Irishman,’ have played in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York. McKay’s film may have a similar schedule, as a theatrical release is required for consideration for Academy Awards. The slate of Academy Award winners in the cast is promising for nominations.

If the film were released at theaters everywhere, it would predictably do well at the box office. The cast would lure many viewers in, with Hollywood stars being a highly effective marketing tool. But making this film and releasing it on the platform soon after the theatrical release is interesting considering that Netflix’s main source of revenue comes from its subscribers. The cast was sure to be extremely costly, as well as the production. A lot of recent talk about the film is centered around surprise about how stacked the cast is. Many social media users commented that this cast alone proves how profitable Netflix has been. At some point, we may know what the purpose of this release schedule is for Netflix and how this reflects their marketing strategy.
